An introduction to Warden
The parish comprises the village of Fourstones and the small village of Warden nestling at the junction of the two rivers North and South Tyne. The parish name derives from the Old English “woer+dun” meaning “sentry hill” and half a mile east of Fourstones stands the hill with the remnants of an Iron Age fort.
Warden is a quiet backwater with beautiful stone buildings, a stone cross and an imposing stone tower. There is an excellent public house with restaurant at Bridge End, just south of the village.
Fourstones has a mixture of housing including 1930s semi-detached and modern stone faced properties, the village has a general store and post office, a Methodist chapel and an inn and filling station with repair facilities. Along with other organisations, members of a Women's Institute meet in the parish.
The major industry in the parish, apart from arable, milk production and livestock farming, is a paper mill on the Stanegate between Warden and Fourstones.
