An introduction to Slaley
The sought-after village of Slaley sits astride a ridge with distant views of Hexham to the north and of Slaley Hall and the forests to the south. The name Slaley, however, is probably Old English "slaef+leah" meaning "muddy woodland clearing"! Overall, the parish extends for a peaceful 11 square miles.
The mile long road through the village is a former coal haulage trackway and indicates the former industry in the area. Slaley, having a great mixture of house types, lies 6 miles south of Hexham, some 27 miles from Newcastle and 40 from Carlisle. Buses on routes 869 and 870 serve the village.
Slaley has a nursery playgroup, a first school and a newsagent and post office. There is a church (C of E) and a Methodist chapel, an inn serving good quality meals, carpet bowls are played at the Commemoration Hall.
The area has many B&Bs and self catering holiday properties and the nearby Slaley Hall hotel, leisure and golf complex caters for the sporting types. Along with other organisations, members of a Women's Institute meet in the village.
