An introduction to Haydon
The parish has a beautiful, rugged and varied landscape within its 27 square mile area. An area that includes the small village of Langley on Tyne, the hamlets of New Alston and Peelwell and a parish centred around the large village of Haydon Bridge.
Haydon Bridge, population 2,300, straddles the river South Tyne and is bisected by the A69 trunk road. Haydon Bridge is 6 miles east of Hexham, and is mid-way between Newcastle and Carlisle being 28 miles from each.
Haydon Bridge has a care home, a health centre, pharmacists, childminders, a nursery, a first school and a high school with adult education facilities and a community centre. The lively village also boasts a butcher’s shop, two newsagents, a general store, a supermarket, three eating establishments and four public houses. The Women's Institute and other groups meet at the village hall in Langley and Haydon Bridge has a bank and a library, both part-time.
This well served village was the birthplace of the famous artist and engraver John Martin (1789-1854). There is also a restaurant in the 13th Century Langley Castle (former home of the Earls of Derwentwater) and a restaurant and inn at Cart’s Bog near the former home of Catherine Cookson.
